    Consumers spend more with gift cards - 56% of gift card recipients spent more than the initial value of their gift card (2005 ValueLink Consumer Insights Study). The average dollar value loaded on gift cards was $44 in 2005 (2005 ValueLink Consumer Insights Study). The average gift card buyer will purchase 5.5 cards in 2005 (2005 ValueLink Consumer Insights Study).

    Merchants brand is enhanced - Gift cards act as mini-billboards in the wallet, increasing visibility and mindshare for the merchant. A gift card recipient is receiving an endorsement of the merchant from the card purchaser. Pre-paid dollars make the merchants store a destination!

    Gift cards can attract new customers - Not only does the card purchaser visit the merchant, but a brand new customer visits later to redeem.

    Money is kept with the merchant - Some merchants opt to use “store credit” via gift cards for merchandise returns. Balance on activated cards is held by the merchant until redemption. Consumers must return to the merchant to redeem the value of the card.

    Easy to Use - Gift cards use magnetic stripe technology compatible with most swipe terminals. Gift card POS applications require a short set of simple commands, requiring little employee training. Transaction fees are lower than interchange charged for credit card purchases.

    May Reduce fraud - Gift Cards only have value if activated through a recorded POS transaction or through block activation, compared to paper gift certificates that are filled in by hand and may or may not be recorded. Card balances are maintained on a remote host for security.
